Snyder Institute Travel Award

Objective. This award aims to support engaged and productive Snyder Institute doctoral (PhD) and post-doctoral fellows (PDF) for travel to recognized academic conferences and meetings through the offer of travel awards.

Eligibility. 

  1. The awards are restricted to:
  • PhD student applicants must be enrolled in a full-time PhD program at the University of Calgary under the supervision of a full member of the Snyder Institute.
  • PDFs that have earned a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree and are under the mentorship of a full member of the Snyder Institute.
  1. Applicants must be regular attendees of the Snyder Institute Graduate Seminar Series and Snyder Invited Speaker, Clinical and Fundamental Research, and Postdoc Seminar Series. Attendance will be recorded via QR code based registration at the beginning of each seminar.
  2. Applicants are only eligible for one award per year with those not previously successful having priority.
  3. Applicants must present a poster or talk. Acceptance can be pending at the time of application, but disposal of funds is contingent upon abstract acceptance.
  4. Applicants with all citizenships are eligible.

Value. The award is valued at $500 (PhD students) and $1000 (PDFs).Up to $750 CAD of supplemental support for researchers with caregiving responsibilities is available, to help cover costs including care for the dependent at home, care at the destination, or travel for a companion carer or the dependent. Applicants can also apply for supplemental support independent of travel funds if they have secured a prior award.

Number of Awards. Up to 10 PhD awards and 6 PDF awards per year, subject to available funding. 

Use of Funds. The purpose of the award is to support PhD students and PDFs to attend national and international conferences and meetings. Use of funds is generally governed by institutional policy and procedure.

Examples of eligible costs include: 

  • Conference registration
  • Accommodation
  •  Per diem (in alignment with the UCalgary Travel and Expense Reimbursement Handbook, which can be found at https://www.ucalgary.ca/finance/expenses-reimbursement/submit-travel-expenses)
  • Travel costs to and from the conference (air tickets, bus, rental car, etc.)

Terms and Conditions. The applicant must submit a completed of travel award application, research abstract, proof of abstract acceptance (meeting attendance), and supervisor’s signature before funds can be awarded.

Review Process.

  • Applications will be assessed by the Snyder Education Committee.
  • All members of the committee will have completed implicit bias training prior to assessing applications.
  • Reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest with applicants, which includes personal or familial relationships and mentorship/supervisory relationships.
  • Reviewers cannot partake in assessing the applicant if there is a conflict of interest.
  • All information will be held confidentially by the awards committee.

Review Criteria

The applications will be reviewed and evaluated based on the following criteria: 

  • Attendance of the Snyder Institute Graduate Seminar Series and Snyder Invited Speaker, Clinical and Fundamental Research, and Postdoc Seminar Series. Attendance will be recorded via QR code based registration at the beginning of each seminar.
  • Completed application documents (see below).

Application Process. Applications are to consist of:

  1. Application Form
  2. Research Abstract including research supervisor’s signature.
  3. Disclosure of acceptance/application of any other travel award, if applicable.
  4. Budget for caregiver support, if applicable.

Application Deadline. Applications can be submitted on a rolling basis.
