Transitioning from academia to industry: leveraging your research and science skills

Tuesday, March 28 from 1 to 2:30 pm | HSC O1500

Broaden your career options by learning how your research and science skills can be applied outside of an academic context. Learn how the skills you are developing as a grad student or postdoc will prepare you for a fulfilling career in industry. You’ll gain an understanding of what companies are looking for and be able to articulate how the skills you are learning now—including technical writing, oral communication, quantitative analysis, grant writing, technical problem solving, project management, and content expertise—make you an ideal candidate for an industry career.

Learning objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to articulate their top 5 scientific skills and the value they can provide for businesses.
  • Attendees will be better prepared to navigate non-academic career opportunities and secure employment.

Coffee and snacks will be provided.

On July 22, 2022, the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases and the Snyder's Trainee Committee, in partnership with UCalgary's STEM Art Hub, hosted a novel conference at the UCalgary Foothills Campus, entitled "Impressions of the Medical Sciences". This conference enabled students, staff, and faculty members pursuing work in the health sciences to submit artworks addressing the prompt; "What does medicine mean to you?". With over 20 submissions, a gallery was hosted at the Foothills HRIC Atrium, where art of diverse media was displayed for the day, including paintings, drawings, poems, 3D installations, and textiles. The conference was interspersed with sessions held by various professionals who have implemented the intersection of art and science into their careers.

The goal of this conference was to promote the importance of incorporating creativity and artistic thinking into the health sciences as a means of expression, communication, and compassion. All art was relocated to Calgary Central Library for an evening viewing, open to the general public, where UCalgary's Dr. Antoine Dufour gave the keynote talk on the insight he has gained as a scientist who actively approaches his work with artistry.

All artworks submitted to the conference were subsequently donated to local hospitals and health service facilities, promoting the artistic talent and skill of individuals pursuing work in medical science. We thank the Snyder Institute, STEM Art Hub, and all participants for the success of this event, and hope it will be the first of many initiatives striving to harmonize art and science within their respective fields.
