Train the Trainer Workshop

Instructional Leadership in Bioimaging

Instructor showing student work on laptop.

As a starting point, we recognize and respect that bioimaging scientists already have expertise teaching and training in their local communities. Here, we are all trainers and all learners. All levels of instructional experience are welcome.

Train the Trainer will be a five day, highly interactive event that will give bioimaging scientists the opportunity to learn and enhance their instructional skills. This event is facilitated by the experienced team from Metonomy and is informed by the internationally recognized Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW), which emphasizes best current practices in teaching and education. At the end of the workshop attendees will achieve an ISW Certificate of Completion.

The Train the Trainer workshop will also built in focused sessions beyond the core ISW training, such as supporting neurodiverse individuals and dealing with misconceptions in imaging.

During the sessions, participants will work alongside fellow bioimaging scientists and facilitators to learn and exchange experiences, share best practices, exchange teaching philosophies, and learn from each other's experiences in the practice of teaching.

Learning with the LCI

The Live Cell Imaging at the University of Calgary has been a leader in designing and delivering education and training in optical microscopy. Our comprehensive training and education program is informed by best practices in education, and emphasizes active, flexible, and practical learning. Our previous microscopy workshops have had as many instructors as students registered, which not only provides learners with a unique opportunity for individual attention, but also means that the instructors can also learn and exchange ideas with one another. In this Train the Trainer workshop we aim to foster a similar community environment where participants share best practices, exchange teaching philosophies, and learn from each other's experiences in the practice of teaching.

We want to now build on our experience supporting the Canadian community to hosting a workshop for imaging scientists and others who training and support students and researchers in optical imaging cores or team labs.
