Dr. Zhang research activities have focused on the molecular detection, characterization, evolution, and pathogenicity of multidrug-resistant staphylococci, particularly the re-emerging community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). Dr. Zhang is in charge of the Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory, a joint program by Alberta Health Services (AHS)/Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL)/University of Calgary (U of C), and is actively involved in the AHS Antibiotic Resistant Organism Program with a mandate to detect, prevent, and control antibiotic-resistant organisms in the region. He is also a member of the International Working Group on the Classification of Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome Elements (IWG-SCC).
