UCalgary launches search for next chancellor
Connector, leader, ambassador. The chancellor of the university is a prominent volunteer and advocate to advance the university’s vision. For the past four years, the University of Calgary's chancellor has been Robert Thirsk, Canadian astronaut and scientist. As his non-renewable term comes to a close, the university senate is now seeking the next chancellor to inspire and share our story with the community.
The chancellor is the chair of the Senate, serves as a member of the Board of Governors, and participates in a number of activities that advance the university on campus and in the broader community. Perhaps most notably, the chancellor has the distinct privilege of conferring degrees to graduands at every convocation, playing a memorable role in the life of every UCalgary student who leaves our institution. As well, the chancellor works with the Senate and the president to select Honorary Degree and Order of the University of Calgary recipients.

“My role as chancellor over these last four years has been fulfilling; I have received so much more back than I ever contributed,” says Thirsk. “Our students, faculty and staff inspire me with their achievements and bolster my confidence in Canada's future.
“A highlight of my term has been the opportunity to connect with stakeholders and volunteers who appreciate the value of post-secondary education and advance our university's bold vision.”
The chancellor is a robust volunteer position that comes with a number of commitments, including convocation, Senate and Board of Governor meetings, as well as the Chancellor’s Club program, Lecture of a Lifetime, and other institutional events.
“The ideal candidate is someone who is not only well connected to the community but also an individual with demonstrated integrity in all aspects of life, who will help promote and nurture the University of Calgary experience for all members of our campus community,” says James McNeil, chair, Chancellor Search Committee.
The submission process is open to all. Candidates must submit a letter of intent and resume before Feb. 21, 2018 to be considered for the role. The process is completely confidential and only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
