Stampede roundup: UCalgary celebrates 10 days of 'Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth'
The 2023 edition of the Calgary Stampede came to a close July 16 after an exciting and action-packed Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
As a proud partner of the Stampede, the University of Calgary participated in a variety of events over the 10 days to help celebrate the city’s premier summer event.
UCalgary actually got a jump-start on the party on July 5 when more than 1,800 community members converged on the TFDL Quad on main campus for the President’s Stampede Barbecue. Students, faculty, staff and alumni enjoyed food, line dancing and live music from Jaydee Bixby, visited with Elders, and took part in the unveiling of UCalgary’s brand-new, “out-of-this-world” parade float featuring Rex riding a spaceship.
The iconic Stampede Parade officially kicked everything off on July 7. UCalgary’s new float won this year’s Best Creative/Innovative Award, with 37 volunteers and support staff marching alongside it through the streets of downtown Calgary.
Down at the Stampede Grounds, UCalgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Outreach Summer Student team held court in the Agrium building for live cow-milking demonstrations, cow/calf simulators, and to provide the public with information on some of their upcoming projects.
In addition to the exhibit, two new videos were produced featuring UCalgary veterinary experts, Talking Dairy Cows with the University of Calgary and Talking Music and Pig Welfare with the University of Calgary. Both were shown during the evening programming at the Nutrien Western Event Centre.
