Open scholarship at UCalgary is on track for big impact
From open access to engaging in collaborative research across all disciplines, open scholarship can transform the way we conduct research and its potential to solve some of society’s most pressing issues.
The Knowledge to Impact (KI) unit within Research Services at the University of Calgary is hosting a 90-minute webinar on Dec. 2 titled Moving UCalgary Forward with Open Science, featuring presentations from faculty and open science experts sharing their own experiences of implementing open scholarship practices.
Whether you’re a scholar, student or simply someone passionate about maximizing research impact, open science can guide how you approach your own work and contribute to a global movement.

What is open science?
Open science — sometimes referred to as open research or open scholarship — is an inclusive approach to scholarship that aims to make the full scholarly process as open and easily accessible as possible, from research inputs and processes to outputs such as data, methods and publications.
UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science outlines the benefits of this approach, including better quality and integrity in research, more citizen involvement, open dialogue with different knowledge systems, and a deeper, more collaborative understanding of global challenges such as climate change and public health.
The principles to lead and maximize research impact are deeply embedded in UCalgary’s current strategic plan, Ahead of Tomorrow, and its Research and Innovation goals. With an executive-level commitment to open science, UCalgary is positioning itself as a leader in creating a more transparent, inclusive and sustainable research ecosystem.
"At the University of Calgary, we are dedicated to advancing the principles of open science across all disciplines," says Dr. William Ghali, vice-president (research). "By fostering a culture of transparency and collaboration, we empower our researchers to push the boundaries of innovation and enhance our capacity to create meaningful impacts for our community and beyond."
Change is in the air...
We are on the precipice of a cultural shift in the way we think about scholarship, research and knowledge sharing. At a time when global challenges demand collective action, open science offers an exciting opportunity to bring people together across disciplines, borders and communities.
“This is an exciting time for both the University of Calgary and the broader research community.” says Dr. Katrina Milaney, associate vice-president (research). “The adoption of open science principles is gaining momentum locally and globally, and UCalgary is poised to play a key role in this transformation.”
To further advance these goals, the KI unit has recently expanded to include open science as a key area of focus and is actively encouraging participation from both on- and off-campus communities.
