Neurodiversity supports and spaces at UCalgary

Where to find advising, workshops, programming or spaces designed for neurodivergent students

UCalgary is taking part in Neurodiversity Celebration Week from March 17 to 21, as part of a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about what it means to be neurodivergent. It’s an opportunity to recognize the neurodiversity amongst our community, creating a more inclusive and welcoming campus that are accessible friendly and accommodating to your needs. Whether it's academic help, specialized advising, or quiet spaces to focus, students can find the support they need—read on to discover just a few of the many supports available.

Chancellor Cuthbertson Student Success Centre

Students can find a variety of academic focused resources for neurodivergent students at the Chancellor Cuthbertson Student Success Centre (SSC). In addition to advising with academic development advisors or academic strategists, the SSC also offers specific workshops and one-on-one support to help neurodivergent students address challenges like focus, note-taking, and test preparation. They even have a sensory-friendly study space where students can work or study in a low-light, quiet environment with optional seating and much more.

The SSC also operates the Neurodiversity Immersive Campus Experience (NICE) Program, a peer-based initiative that offers mentorship, social events, and tailored resources to create a supportive community for neurodivergent students.

Centre for Career and Personal Development

Being neurodivergent can impact students in their job search, as well as how they navigate the workplace. Advisors at the Centre for Career and Personal Development (CCPD) can offer personalized support to help you navigate the job market and find opportunities that align with your strengths. They also provide Life Design programming and workshops that helps students build resiliency and problem-solving skills they apply to their personal and professional lives.

Student Accessibility Services

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is dedicated to helping students succeed by providing a range of resources and accommodations, such as assistive technology, accommodations, advising, access to grants and more to help students navigate university life seamlessly. Whether it’s academic assistance, or help finding the right tools for your learning style, SAS is there to provide resources that can help you excel.

Note: Students must first register with SAS to access specialized advising and services.

The Neurodiversity Support Office in Student Accessibility Services (SAS) provides broad support such as workshops, online resources, and a neurodiversity support advising environment. If you’re seeking community, there are also many peer-based programs to connect you with others who share similar experiences such as the drop in section that happens on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays between 2pm to 4pm.

When you need a moment to recharge, take a break the Sensory-Friendly Student Lounge in MSC 450. It offers a calm and comfortable space; it’s a cozy, sensory friendly space open to all self-identifying neurodivergent UCalgary students—just tap in with your UCID card to access the lounge!
