In Memoriam | H. Ian Rounthwaite, Professor of Law Emeritus
Professor Emeritus Ian Rounthwaite passed away on October 18, 2023. He was a professor at UCalgary Law for more than 30 years.
Several colleagues shared fond memories if Ian:
"Ian was a pioneer in environmental and natural resources law, especially species at risk, biodiversity, and protected areas law. His work is foundational in these areas. Ian is one of the reasons I was excited about coming to the U of C to teach. He was a wonderful colleague and a friend I could go to for everything from serious advice to casual chat."
"Ian was so committed to teaching and the law school. His approach to teaching real estate law was full on experiential learning before its time."
"Ian was an established scholar in protected areas and was well ahead of his time in thinking critically and writing about endangered species law and policy in Canada. Indeed, recent events and litigation about the refusal to grant emergency protection for the last spotted owl in Canada relate to questions and issues under federal species at risk legislation which Ian was raising way back in 2005."
