Haskayne announces $100,000 student scholarship, the largest ever for the business school
The best and brightest incoming Bachelor of Commerce students will soon have a unique opportunity for a game-changing scholarship worth $100,000 over the four years of their studies.
Thanks to a generous gift of $500,000 from Richard and Lois Haskayne, five undergraduate students will get a full-ride scholarship through their program. One student will be selected for the scholarship every year for the next five years and will receive $25,000 per year for four years.
The first award will be given this spring and that student will begin studies in September 2019.
“This is a special scholarship designed by the business school to attract the most outstanding students,” said Dick Haskayne, a Calgary business icon and the school’s benefactor.
“While it’s nice for me to have our name associated with the university, the people who are going to establish the reputation over time are the students. It’s up to them to get the very best education from the best business school available and that’s what we are trying to do.”
The Richard and Lois Haskayne Legacy Scholarship is the largest and most prestigious at the Haskayne School of Business and is among the very largest on the University of Calgary campus. The scholarship will recognize exceptional academic merit and promise in students as well as contribution to school and community life while demonstrating leadership.

All of us are given some capacity or other to make a difference in the world,” added Lois Haskayne. “Any education above high school gives you enormous choices. You might even start out the first four years with our scholarship and turn around and do a postgraduate degree, a master's or a PhD. You can be anything you want, but the four years of the Haskayne scholarship is going to give you a huge advantage.”
Haskayne Dean Jim Dewald thanked Dick and Lois Haskayne for their continued support of the school and its students with the $500,000 gift that made this scholarship possible.
“The Haskayne family has been incredibly generous to the University of Calgary and I am so grateful that their ongoing support will enable distinguished students to get an incredible education,” said Dewald. “Our students benefit with a world-class scholarship, our school benefits by recruiting high-achieving students, and ultimately our community benefits when we invest in our youth.”
The gift is part of the university’s $1.3 billion Energize campaign. Student awards play a significant role in helping to prepare and inspire the leaders of tomorrow. Scholarships attract and retain high-achieving students, while bursaries help remove barriers, making post-secondary education financially possible for students at all levels.
